MUNICIPALITY OF VALONGO, PORTUGAL

As the Youth Division of the Municipality of Valongo, we have a long-standing commitment to youth development and empowerment. Our mission is to foster active involvement and participation of young people in the social, cultural, and civic life of our municipality. We believe in creating an environment conducive to the holistic development of our youth, valuing their skills and potential, and stimulating their active participation in building a more dynamic and inclusive community.

Our work is centered around three major areas of intervention: Youth Empowerment, Youth Participation, and Information and Communication.

  1. Youth Empowerment: We focus on equipping our youth with the necessary skills and knowledge to become active contributors to society. We organize various training sessions, workshops, and seminars that aim to enhance their personal and professional competencies. Our initiatives are designed to empower them to lead projects and initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility and leadership among them.
  2. Youth Participation: We strongly believe in the power of participatory democracy. To this end, we have implemented Participatory Budgets, which allow our youth to have a say in how certain parts of the municipal budget are spent. We also encourage their involvement in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed.
  3. Information and Communication: We strive to keep our youth informed about the latest developments, opportunities, and initiatives in our municipality. We use various communication channels to disseminate information and engage with them effectively.

In addition to these, we have been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices and green entrepreneurship among our youth. Our latest addition to the Participatory Budget, the Green category, encourages our youth to come up with innovative, eco-friendly solutions to environmental challenges.

Our efforts in youth work have been recognized on a national level, with Valongo winning the Green Leaf Award in 2021. This award has boosted our resolve to continue our work in promoting youth participation and sustainable practices.

The Youth Division of the Municipality of Valongo is dedicated to fostering youth empowerment and active involvement in the community. Our regular activities include:

Educational Workshops and Seminars: We regularly organize workshops and seminars on a variety of topics, including leadership, entrepreneurship, and human rights. These activities are designed to equip our youth with the skills and knowledge they need to become active contributors to society.

Community Engagement Initiatives: We encourage our youth to take an active role in community life. This includes participating in community service projects, volunteering opportunities, and local events.

Youth Participation in Decision-Making: Through initiatives like the Participatory Budget, we give our youth a say in how certain parts of the municipal budget are spent. This not only empowers them but also gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their community.

Information and Communication: We use various communication channels, including social media, to keep our youth informed about the latest developments, opportunities, and initiatives in our municipality.

The commitment to create youth policies that contribute to the Youth Goals and the II National Youth Plan is also a concern, so we are working on a set of indicators that will inform our activities and progress towards national and international goals.
